LOCKERBIE LEARNING

Underpinning life at Lockerbie College are a set of attributes and values, which the school strives to develop in its students. These qualities are firmly embedded in what we call, “Lockerbie Learning”, and are considered core factors within the ‘hidden curriculum’.

Young people are just as likely to learn outside the classroom as in it.

Great learning, however, is a social activity, occurring when students interact positively with peers and especially with dynamic teachers who express interest in what they have to say.

Once students find their voice within a safe space, they freely embrace new ideas that drive personal growth and develop positive habits.

Many of our students secure places at top universities through academic achievement, yet they tell us that it is their transferable skills and how they have developed as people that they credit for having best prepared them for the world after school.

PRIMARY LEVEL

Students in our Junior School, aged between 8 and 11, follow the Barbados National Curriculum and Barbadian nationals are prepared for the Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (BSSEE). However, Lockerbie College matrices aspects of the International Primary Curriculum and the Cambridge International Primary Curriculum so that our students experience a broader world view closer to that of British or North American students.

Lockerbie College truly does emphasize the importance of understanding each and every one of its students.

Past Student

In 2018, 100% of our Upper 6th Formers were accepted into the university of their first or second choice.

Lockerbie College provides several educational options, including: the Barbados National Curriculum, US and Canadian state school curricula; support for a number of online programmes; the International Baccalaureate (country specific) and Cambridge International Assessment Education. The educational journey for each student is constructed based upon individual needs, proficiency, ability and goals. Lockerbie College provides diverse yet seamless education from the Junior level through to University entry.

PROFICIENCY LEVELS

When students transfer to Lockerbie College, our detailed admissions process looks analytically at each student’s proficiency levels across each subject. It is from those levels that we start building meaningful competency through offering academic support to ensure there are no loopholes remaining Just as houses built on sand will fall, new knowledge placed on patchy understanding or incomplete competencies, will never allow students to be in a position where they can excel. Academic results and a student’s sense of achievement and self-worth are closely intertwined. In raising one, the other follows.

CHALLENGING THE GIFTED AND TALENTED

When we look at the proficiency levels of some students in specific subjects, these surpass what is expected at a certain age or class level. These students are gifted and talented and to keep them challenged, they need to be taught at a higher level. These students are placed in accelerated programmes of study in the subjects where they show high aptitude. Students at Lockerbie College sit exams when they are ready and some students are prepared for external examinations earlier than their chronological peers.

It’s so important to enter the “real world” with a more sound understanding of the realities that we face, and I’m truly grateful that I was able to spend some of the most formative years of my life at Lockerbie College.

" The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country. "
